Cowichan’s Best Chocolate Chip Cookie: It’s Official

Yesterday morning I entered Mellor Hall at the Cowichan Exhibition grounds feeling nervous. I walked past Jennifer Tinsley’s amazing mural without looking up, nor did I notice the thousands of exhibition entries including wine, flowers, baked goods, weaving, quilting, honey, and crafts covering tables from end to end of the massive hall. I was entirely focused on the Domestic Science tables, where the night before I had placed 6 chocolate chip cookies, carefully selected from a freshly baked batch of 30, and one cake, made by my mister. The 2011 Chocolate Chip Cookie-Off: Bring it!

From the moment I became a mom, I was determined to make the best chocolate-chip cookies. A cookie so delicious it would lure little Hansels and Gretels into my home, thus acquainting me with the children my girls play with. These children would leave spellbound, unconsciously driven to keep my girls safe so they were assured access to my freshly baked cookie-scented kitchen. I once told a Saanich cow farmer that I was too chicken to drive up a farm’s lane to buy their produce or meat, even if there were big signs urging me to stop and shop. And A Side Of Hairy Cat’s Ear Fries

We have a good-sized yard. Much of it is septic field, but there are pockets where this house’s previous owner planted the most beautiful irises, daisies, lilies, camellia, hydrangea, and poppies. Since we bought the house, the garden has become progressively more wild. Noticing all the dandelions and tall grasses, my friend Heather said, with the same awkward kindness upon greeting an ugly baby, “This garden has…potential.” Continue reading
