The Ultimate Cowichan Valley Day

Okay, so the sun’s not quite out yet, but today could shape up to the ultimate Cowichan Valley day.

Start at the Duncan Farmers’ Market. Sip a Peaks Coffee from at coffee aficionado Dana Meinor’s stall while you admire the market’s abundant display of produce, crafts and gourmet foods from the Valley. In one place, in one hour, you get an idea of why we’re so lucky to live here.

Next, have a glass (or two!) of Glenora Fantasia Sparkling at Zanatta Vineyard to begin your Cowichan Wine & Culinary Festival tour (here’s a map). While you’re out in Glenora, stop at Alderlea Farm for a Borscht cook-off, BBQ sausage and a hayride.

Thirsty again? Godfrey-Brownell Vineyard has tastings, snacks, and live music to get the party started. And when you’re ready for dessert, head to Organic Fair in Cobble Hill to taste the most delicious, imaginative chocolate (dare I say it?) in the world.

The rest is just up to chance. See where the wind and wine takes you next. North to Averill Creek and Deol Estate vineyards? Or south to Merridale Cidery? Or east to Cherry Point Vineyards?

End the day at Masthead Restaurant in Cowichan Bay, or Deerholme Farm for Averill Creek’s Winemaker’s dinner. Book ahead for either.

Or if you need time to digest and just want pure entertainment, go watch Gordie Howe drop the puck at tonight’s Capitals hockey game.

The ultimate Cowichan Valley day. Bon appetit!

  1. Sigh. It’s so true. We live in the best place! Especially if you love great food. We didn’t do the full on festival this year, but we did stop in at Alderlea to admire their new building, and at Cherry Point to pick up a case of our favourite Coastal White. And then we went crabbing and sailing and made jam. It’s a tough life, but somebody has to do it! 🙂

  2. Greetings from Vermont, USA. Have enjoyed your posts and I have a question. How would you compare the communities, weather and overall vibe in the Cowichan Valley with the Sunshine coast? Thanks.

    1. Hi Tom,

Thanks for asking. I’ve put your question out to the rest of my readers (check out my latest post). Hopefully between the lot of us you’ll get some answers!
